Internationale Portfolio Review – Friends of Photography 

zur 8. Triennale der Photographie Hamburg 2022 / Open Call: 15. März - 20. April

 

Im Rahmen der 8. Triennale der Photographie bringen wir unsere Portfolio Review zurück! 
Der Freundeskreis des Hauses der Photographie e. V. empfängt zusammen mit FUTURES, einer Plattform für Fotografie mit wachsendem Netzwerk aus führenden Fotografie-Institutionen in ganz Europa, 40 angehende Fotograf:innen und Young Professionals zur internationalen Portfolio Review „Friends of Photography“ ein. Die Teilnehmenden präsentieren am 4. Juni den Expert:innen ihre Arbeiten und erhalten ein wertvolles Feedback, einen aktiven Austausch sowie die Möglichkeit ihr Netzwerk auszubauen. Die „Best Portfolios” werden beim abschließenden Screening mit den diesjährigen >>follow up-Talenten im PHOXXI, dem temporären Haus der Photographie der Deichtorhallen Hamburg, ausgezeichnet. Ein Tag und eine Nacht zelebrieren wir die Fotografie zusammen mit einem intensiven und buntem Rahmenprogramm! 

Bis zum 20. April können sich interessierte Fotograf:innen für die Teilnahme bewerben. Die folgenden Sichter:innen, aus der Welt der Kunst, Medien, Wissenschaft, Werbung, Art Buying und Consulting sowie internationalen Akteur:innen der 8. Triennale, stellen sich euren Fragen: 

Je nach eurer fotografischen Ausrichtung werdet ihr bei der Portfoliosichtung die passenden Expert:innen finden. Spezialisiert auf Consulting rund um die Fotografie ist Silke Güldner sowie Anja Kneller, die euch zusätzlich Anregungen und Insights zu Art Buying geben kann. 
Tipps aus der photographischen Praxis und Theorie bekommt ihr von unseren Lehrenden Karen Fromm und Christoph Bangert insbesondere im Bereich Dokumentarfotografie und Fotojournalismus. Ebenso von der Fotografin und Dozentin Paula Winkler
Aus dem Bereich Publikationen und Fotobuch beraten euch Alexa Becker und Anna Gripp & Denis Brudna von Photonews.

Prof. Christoph Bangert arbeitet als Fotograf, Autor und Dozent. Er studierte Fotojournalismus und Dokumentarfotografie am International Center of Photography in New York. Im Auftrag der New York Times dokumentierte er von 2005 bis 2013 die Kriege in Afghanistan und Irak. Er ist der Autor mehrerer Bücher, darunter War Porn (Kehrer 2014), hello camel (Kehrer 2016) und Rumors of War (Kehrer 2021). Bangert ist Gründer der Fotobus Society, eines der größten gemeinnützigen Fotostudentenprojekte weltweit. Derzeit ist Bangert Professor für Fotografie an der Fachhochschule Hannover. 

Alexa Becker hat einen Master-Abschluss in Kunstgeschichte von der Universität Heidelberg und arbeitet als Redakteurin für Fotografie- und Kunstbücher für den Kehrer Verlag in Deutschland. Becker berät Fotografen bei verschiedenen internationalen Portfoliobesprechungen in Bezug auf Inhalt und Stil ihrer Arbeiten. Sie schätzt die besonderen Qualitäten eines Werks, insbesondere die Entdeckung echter Visionen der Welt. Becker ist auch als freiberufliche Beraterin tätig und coacht Fotograf:innen unabhängig.

Prof. Dr. Karen Fromm ist Professorin an der Fachhochschule Hannover und lehrt dort im Studiengang Fotojournalismus und Dokumentarfotografie. In der Vergangenheit leitete sie die Galerie Pfefferberg in Berlin und war Teil der Leitung der Foto- und Presseagentur FOCUS. Sie hat die Plattform [IMAGE MATTERS] gegründet und Bände wie Images in Conflict (2018) herausgegeben. Fromm ist Leiterin des LUMIX Festivals für jungen visuellen Journalismus.  

Anna Gripp lebt in Hamburg und ist Chefredakteurin der Zeitschrift Photonews. Sie ist die Hauptautorin des Buches "Fotografie-Studium in Deutschland" und Gründungsmitglied des Vereins Netzwerk Fotoarchive. Seit 2017 ist sie Mitglied im Vorstand der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh). Gripp hat in zahlreichen Wettbewerbsjurys mitgewirkt, z.B. beim BFF-Förderpreis, Peter-Keetman-Preis und mehr. Außerdem ist sie Jurorin bei Portfoliosichtungen, wie dem Houston FotoFest oder dem Freundeskreis Photographie Hamburg. Gripp arbeitete auch als freiberufliche Fotografin.  

Denis Brudna sesshaft in Hamburg, ist Gründer und Herausgeber der Zeitschrift PHOTONEWS seit 1989. Er studierte Malerei, Grafik und Fotografie in Prag. 1971 war Brudna Gründungsmitglied des Kultur- und Kommunikationszentrums FABRIK in Hamburg und bis Anfang 2019 verantwortlich für Grafik und Werbung. 1972 gründete er das FABRIK FOTOFORUM Hamburg und organisierte in diesem Rahmen über 370 Ausstellungen. 1989 war er Gründungsmitglied des Arbeitskreises für Fotografie in Hamburg und 2011 Gründungsmitglied des Vereins Netzwerk Fotoarchive.  

Teona Gogichaishvili, geboren in Georgien, studierte Germanistik, Geschichte und Philosophie in Georgien und Deutschland und schloss mit einem Master of Arts in Fotografie und Design ab. Seit 2006 ist Gogichaishvili als freiberufliche Kuratorin, Fotografin und Dozentin international tätig. Sie ist Mitorganisatorin und Kuratorin des internationalen Fotofestivals KOLGA TBILISI PHOTO in Georgien. Seit 2017 ist sie Leiterin des Fachbereichs Kunst an der Musik- und Kunstschule Remscheid. Gemeinsam mit Antonia Loick und Inga Schneider gründete sie 2018 das PURPUR COLLECTIVE mit dem Fokus auf Frauen in der Fotografie. Seit 2022 ist Gogichaishvili Mitglied im Vorstand der DGPh und arbeitet als Portfolio-Sichterin bei verschiedenen internationalen Fotofestivals, darunter das FOTOFEST in Houston. 

Ángel Luis González Fernández ist Designer, Künstler und Kurator. Im Jahr 2010 gründete er PhotoIreland, um einen kritischen Dialog über Fotografie anzuregen. Er entwirft kuratorische Projekte, die Gespräche über visuelle Kultur und kritisches Denken in den öffentlichen Raum bringen. 2011 wurde er als Gewinner des Business to Arts David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Awards ausgezeichnet. 2020 rief er die kritische Publikation OVER Journal ins Leben, die inzwischen weltweit vertrieben, wird. 2022 wird er die Forschung über den breiten historischen und spezifischen künstlerischen Kontext der Fotografie in Irland vertiefen, um eine anspruchsvolle Übersichtsausstellung im Rahmen des PhotoIreland Festivals 2022 zu kuratieren. 

 

Silke Güldner coacht Fotograf:innen und Kreative und unterstützt sie dabei, ihr Potenzial und ihre Kompetenz im Business zu entwickeln und zu präsentieren. Seit 2011 hat sie eine Kolumne für Profifotografen in ProfiFoto, ihr erstes Buch "Erfolg im Foto-Business" ist 2019 erschienen. Die ehemalige Art-Direktorin verfügt über langjährige Erfahrung in der Kreativbranche und gründete eine erfolgreiche Agentur für Fotografenmanagement. Heute gibt sie Einzelberatungen für Profi- und Nachwuchsfotograf:innen sowie Workshops für Unternehmen und Institutionen der Kreativwirtschaft. Zu ihren internationalen Kund:innen zählen unter anderem das Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, der Schweizer Berufsfotografen Verband und Canon.  

Anja Kneller gründete 2015 ein Mietfotostudio und arbeitet neben ihrer Tätigkeit als Fotoredakteurin als Beraterin und Coach für Fotograf:innen und im Bereich Art Buying. Sie studierte Kunst in Karlsruhe und Marketing in Hamburg. Kneller arbeitete in den Bereichen Marketing und HR bei den Werbeagenturen McCann und BBDO in Düsseldorf und Hamburg. Sie arbeitete mehrere Jahre als Director of Photography für Content-Marketing-Unternehmen, Verlage und Agenturen. Seit 2010 ist sie im Vorstand des Freundeskreises Haus der Photographie, Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Kneller ist außerdem Mitglied der DGPh. 

Celina Lunsford ist Kuratorin und Autorin, spezialisiert auf internationale Tendenzen in der Fotografie sowie auf die Geschichte der Fotografie. Seit 1992 ist sie für das Ausstellungs- und Akademieprogramm des Fotografie Forums Frankfurt verantwortlich. Sie ist Gründerin und Kuratorin der RAY Triennale für internationale Fotografie und war Jurymitglied bei zahlreichen Preisen für fotografische Kunst. Sie kuratierte das Photography Festival Lodz 2011 in Polen und war 2007 Co-Kuratorin des Lianzhou International Photography Festival in China. Sie war Mentorin der Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam sowie des Asia-Europe Foundation Forum for Photographers in Cork und Dublin.  

Oluremi C. Onabanjo ist Ko-Kuratorin in der Abteilung für Fotografie am Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, und Teil des Kurator:innen-Teams der 8. Triennale der Photographie Hamburg 2022. Sie hat Ausstellungen in Afrika, Europa und Nordamerika organisiert und verwaltet eine der bedeutendsten privaten Fotografie Sammlungen. Sie ist Doktorandin in Kunstgeschichte an der Columbia University und hält international Vorträge über Fotografie und kuratorische Praxis. 2017 war sie Ko-Kuratorin von Recent Histories: Zeitgenössische afrikanische Fotografie und Videokunst und gab die begleitende Publikation Steidl heraus, die für den ICP Infinity Award in Critical Writing and Research nominiert war. Onabanjo ist die Herausgeberin des in Kürze erscheinenden Fotobuchs Marilyn Nance: Last Day in Lagos (2022).  

Giangavino Pazzola, geboren in Italien, arbeitet als Kurator und hat einen Doktortitel in Stadt- und Kulturwissenschaften am Politecnico di Torino. Seit 2018 ist er assoziierter Kurator bei CAMERA - Italienisches Zentrum für Fotografie, wo er neben der Kuration von Ausstellungen und Forschungsprogrammen auch das europäische Programm FUTURES Photography leitet. Er hat Ausstellungen und Projekte in Zusammenarbeit mit Institutionen wie dem Museomontagna in Turin und der Elpis Foundation in Mailand kuratiert. Pazzola hat in internationalen und nationalen Fachzeitschriften über zeitgenössische Kunst und unabhängige kulturelle Produktionszentren geschrieben. Außerdem ist er Mitglied des Kuratoriums von The Phair. 

Cecilia Reynoso, geboren 1980 in Buenos Aires, studierte Film an der Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, wo sie seit kurzem unterrichtet. Sie ist eine unabhängige Dokumentarfotografin in Argentinien, die sich für Arbeiten interessiert, die sich um Bindungen und das Intime drehen. Seit zwölf Jahren fotografiert sie die Familie ihres Lebensgefährten und konzentriert sich dabei auf die Beziehung zum Körper der Mitglieder dieser Gemeinschaft. Mahlzeiten, bei denen alle um den Tisch versammelt sind, Spiele von jungen Leuten, die übereinandergestapelt werden, Momente am Ende des Lebens alter Menschen. Sie interessiert sich auch für den kreativen fotografischen Prozess, der unsichtbare Referenzen und Einflüsse aus anderen Kunstformen einbezieht. 

Ingo Taubhorn ist Kurator, Fotograf, Filmemacher und Autor. Er studierte Visuelle Kommunikation in Dortmund mit den Schwerpunkten Film und Fotografie und begann seine fotografische Karriere als Fotokünstler. Seit 1988 ist er international als freier Kurator tätig und kuratierte zahlreiche Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen. Seit 2006 ist er Kurator am Haus der Photographie, Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Taubhorn hat mehrere Lehraufträge im Bereich Fotografie und visuelle Medien, u.a. eine Meisterklasse an der Ostkreuzschule Berlin. Er ist Mitglied der DGPh und Präsident der Deutschen Fotografischen Akademie (DFA). 

István Virágvölgyi, geboren und wohnhaft in Budapest, Ungarn, ist Kurator und Bildredakteur. Er studierte Freihandzeichnen, Desktop-Publishing und Fotografie und erwarb einen Master-Abschluss in Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaften an der Eötvös Loránd Universität. 2007 begann er beim führenden ungarischen Nachrichtenportal Origo zunächst als Fotoredakteur und dann als Leiter der Fotoabteilung zu arbeiten. Von 2014 bis 2019 war er Dozent für Dokumentarfotografie und Bildbearbeitung an der Budapest Metropolitan University. Seit 2014 arbeitet er als Kurator des Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center und ist der Sekretär des Capa Grand Prize Hungary. Seit 2016 ist er Kulturberater der Erzabtei von Pannonhalma und seit 2021 Mitglied des Kuratoriums des József Pécsi Photography Scholarship für junge Künstler:innen. 

Paula Winkler ist eine in Berlin ansässige redaktionelle Fotografin. Sie arbeitet für renommierte Magazine und Zeitungen wie das ZEITmagazin und das SZ Magazin. Ihre persönlichen Arbeiten wurden in mehreren Ausstellungen wie "In the Cut - der männliche Akt in der feministischen Kunst" gezeigt. Sie ist auch Mitglied von femxphotographers, einem unabhängigen Kollektiv, das sich der Förderung der Arbeit von Künstlerinnen widmet, die mit Fotografie arbeiten. Außerdem ist Winkler Dozentin für Fotografie am Lette-Verein Berlin.

International Portfolio Review – Friends of Photography 

within the 8th Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2022 / Open Call: March 15 - April 20 

 

As part of the 8th Triennial of Photography, we are bringing back our Portfolio Review!  
The Friends of the House of Photography e. V., along with FUTURES, a platform for photography with a growing network of executive photography institutions throughout Europe, invites 40 aspiring photographers to the international Portfolio Review "Friends of Photography". The young professionals will present their work to the experts on June 4 and receive valuable feedback, an active exchange and the opportunity to expand their network. The "Best Portfolios" will be awarded at the final screening with this year's >>follow up talents at PHOXXI, the temporary House of Photography at Deichtorhallen Hamburg. One day and one night we celebrate photography together with an intensive supporting program!  

Interested photographers can apply for participation until April 20. The following experts from the fields of art, media, science, advertising, art buying and consulting as well as international actors of the 8th Triennial will answer your questions.

Depending on your personal and photographic orientation, you will find the right experts at our portfolio review. Silke Güldner and Anja Kneller are specialized in consulting around photography, additionally Anja Kneller can give you insights into art buying. You will get tips in practice and theory from our teachers Karen Fromm and Christoph Bangert, especially in the field of documentary photography and photojournalism. Also from photographer and lecturer Paula WinklerAnna Gripp & Denis Brudna from Photonews and Alexa Becker will advise you on publications and photo books.  
Network with the actors of this year's Triennial, curator Oluremi C. Prof. Christoph Bangert works as a photographer, author and educator. He studied photojournalism and documentary photography at the International Center of Photography in New York. On assignment for the New York Times, he documented the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2005 to 2013. He is the author of several books, including War Porn (Kehrer 2014), hello camel (Kehrer 2016) and Rumors of War (Kehrer 2021). Bangert is the founder of the Fotobus Society, one of the largest non-profit photography student projects worldwide. Currently, Bangert is a professor of photography at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. 

Alexa Becker has a master's degree in Art History from the University of Heidelberg and works as a contributing editor for photography and art books, for the German-based publisher Kehrer Verlag. Becker provides artistic and marketing advice for photographers concerning the content and style of their work at several international portfolio reviews. She appreciates the special qualities present in a work, in particular discovering genuine visions of the world. Becker is also a freelance consultant, advising and coaching photographers independently.  

Prof. Dr. Karen Fromm is a Professor at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hanover, where she teaches visual culture, pictorial languages, and the documentary. In the past she managed the Galerie Pfefferberg in Berlin and was a member of the management at FOCUS photography and press agency. She has founded the platform (IMAGE MATTERS) and edited volumes like Images in Conflict (2018). Fromm is Head of the International Class for Photojournalism and Documentary Photography in Hanover and director of the LUMIX Festival for Young Visual Journalism.  

Anna Gripp is based in Hamburg, and editor in chief of the magazine Photonews. She is the main author of the book "Fotografie-Studium in Deutschland" and founding member of the association Netzwerk Fotoarchive. Since 2017 she is a member of the Executive Board of the German Society for Photography, DGPh.  Gripp participated in numerous competition juries, e.g., the BFF-Förderpreis, Peter Keetman Prize and more. She also juries portfolio sightings, like the Houston FotoFest or the Freundeskreis Photographie Hamburg. Gripp also worked as a freelance photographer.  

Denis Brudna is based in Hamburg Germany and founder and editor of the magazine PHOTONEWS in 1989. He studied painting, graphics, and photography in Prague. In 1971 Brudna was a founding member of the cultural and communication center FABRIK in Hamburg and responsible for graphics, advertising, and CI until early 2019. 1972 he founded the FABRIK FOTOFORUM and organized over 370 exhibitions. In 1989 he was founding member of the Arbeitskreis für Fotografie in Hamburg and founding member of the association Netzwerk Fotoarchive in 2011.  

Teona Gogichaishvili, born in Georgia studied German philology, history and philosophy in Georgia and Germany, graduating with a Master of Arts in Photography and Design. Since 2006, Gogichaishvili is an international freelance curator, photographer, and lecturer. She has been the co-organizer and curator of the international photography festival KOLGA TBILISI PHOTO in Georgia. Since 2017 she is the head of the art department at the Music and Art School of Remscheid. Together with Antonia Loick and Inga Schneider, she founded PURPUR COLLECTIVE in 2018, with a focus on women in photography. Since 2022, Gogichaishvili is a member of the Board of Directors of the DGPh. She is also a portfolio reviewer, in various international photo festivals, including the Houston FOTOFEST. 

Ángel Luis González Fernández is a designer, artist, and curator. In 2010 he founded PhotoIreland, to stimulate a critical dialogue on Photography. He devises curatorial projects placing conversations in the public realm around visual culture and critical thinking. 2011 he was awarded the winner of the Business to Arts David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Awards. 2020 he launched the critical publication OVER Journal, now distributed globally. 2022 he will deepen the research on the broad historical and specific artistic context of Photography in Ireland, to curate an ambitious survey exhibition in PhotoIreland Festival 2022. 

Silke Güldner coaches' photographers and creative professionals, supporting them in developing, presenting, and selling potential and competence in business. Since 2011 she has a column for professional photographers in ProfiFoto, her first book "Erfolg im Foto-Business" has been released in 2019. The former art director has many years of experience in the creative industry and founded a successful agency for photographers' management. Today, she gives one-on-one consultations for professional and up-and-coming photographers, as well as workshops for companies and institutions in the creative industries. Among her international clients are Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, Schweizer Berufsfotografen Verband, Canon and more.  

Anja Kneller founded a rental photo studio in 2015 and works as a consultant and coach for photographers alongside her job as a photo editor and art buyer. She studied art in Karlsruhe and marketing in Hamburg. Kneller worked in Marketing and HR at the advertising agencies McCann and BBDO in Düsseldorf and Hamburg. She worked several years as director of photography for content marketing companies, publishing houses and agencies. Since 2010, she has been on the board of the Friends of House of Photography/Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Kneller is also a member of the DGPh. 

Celina Lunsford is a curator and writer specialized on international tendencies in photography as well as the history of photography. Since 1992 she has been responsible for the exhibition and academy program of the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. She is a founder and curator for RAY Triennale for International Photography and has juried numerous prizes for photographic arts. She curated for the Photography Festival Lodz 2011 in Poland and in 2007 she co-curated the Lianzhou International Photography Festival in China. She has mentored the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam as well as the Asia-Europe Foundation Forum for Photographers in Cork and Dublin.  

Oluremi C. Onabanjo is an associate curator in the department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York and part of the curation team of the 8. triennial of Photography Hamburg 2022 She has organized exhibitions across Africa, Europe, and North America, and managed one of the most significant private collections of photography in the world. She is a Ph.D. candidate in Art History at Columbia University and lectures internationally on photography and curatorial practice. In 2017, she co-curated Recent Histories: Contemporary African Photography and Video Art, and edited its accompanying publication Steidl, which was shortlisted for an ICP Infinity Award in Critical Writing and Research. Onabanjo is the editor of the forthcoming photobook, Marilyn Nance: Last Day in Lagos (2022). 

Giangavino Pazzola, born in Italy, works as a curator and has a Ph.D. in Urban and Cultural Studies at the Politecnico di Torino. Since 2018 he is associate curator at CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography where, in addition to curating the exhibitions and research programs, he oversees the European program FUTURES Photography. He has curated exhibitions and projects in collaboration with institutions such as Museomontagna in Turin and Elpis Foundation in Milan. He has written on contemporary arts and independent cultural production centers in international and national academic journals. He is also a member of the Board of Curators of The Phair. 

Cecilia Reynoso, born in 1980 in Buenos Aires, studied cinema at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, where she recently started teaching. She is an independent documental photographer based in Argentina, interested in works that revolve around bonds and the intimate. For twelve years she has photographed the family of her companion, focusing on the relationship to the body of members of this community. Meals where everyone is gathered around the table, games of young people stacked on top of each other, moments of the end of life for old people. She is also interested in the creative photographic process that involves invisible references and influences from other forms of art. 

Ingo Taubhorn is a curator, photographer, filmmaker and author. He studied visual communication in Dortmund with a focus on film and photography and started his photographic career as a photo artist. He started to work as an international freelance curator in 1988, curating many individual and group shows. Since 2006 he is the chief curator at Haus der Photographie, Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Taubhorn has several lectureships in photography and visual media, e.g. a master class at the Ostkreuzschule Berlin. He is a member of the DGPh and is the president of the Deutsche Fotografische Akademie (DFA). 

István Virágvölgyi, born and based in Budapest, Hungary, is a curator and photo editor. He studied freehand drawing, desktop publishing, photography and earned a master's degree from library and information studies at Eötvös Loránd University. 2007 he started working at the leading Hungarian news portal Origo first as photo editor and then as head of photography. He lectured about documentary photography and photo editing at the Budapest Metropolitan University between 2014 and 2019. Since 2014 he works as curator of the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center, and he is the secretary of the Capa Grand Prize Hungary. Since 2016 he is cultural advisor of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma and since 2021 member of the board of trustees of the József Pécsi Photography Scholarship for young artists. 

Paula Winkler is an editorial photographer based in Berlin. She works for renowned magazines and newspapers such as ZEITmagazin and SZ Magazin. Her personal work has been exhibited in several shows such as „ In the Cut - the male nude in feminist art". She is also a member of femxphotographers which is an independent collective dedicated to promoting the work of female artists working with photography. In addition she teaches photography at the Lette-Verein Berlin.
